Nearly one week after the city council adopted its 2014 budget, members will begin hearing from leaders at CPS Energy about a possible rate hike.

CPS last raised rates in 2010 and passed up an opportunity to raise rates last year because the utility said it found efficiencies within the organization and delayed certain infrastructure projects.

This time, CPS Energy will ask for a 4.75 percent rate increase, which would equal a $5.19 hike to the average CPS Energy bill.

Responding to criticism that it has failed to meet promises for additional transparency made by its CEO, this month CPS Energy will begin offering customers a breakdown of some of their costs.

A line on the back of the CPS Energy bill shows the customer’s Cost for Fuel Adjustment, the relative cost of different sources of energy it uses in its portfolio.

As temperatures climb into the triple digits this week, more people may be looking to their air conditioners for relief. With that in mind, CPS Energy is cautioning consumers about the potential problems of putting too much strain on home air-conditioning systems.

CPS Energy’s Albert Cantu says many people don’t know that their home air conditioner is only designed to produce air that’s 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature.

CPS Energy set a goal to reduce the community’s electric usage by 771 megawatts by the year 2020, which is essentially the output of a large power plant.

With the help of the Save for Tomorrow Energy Plan, CPS Energy reports that they are on its way to the goal.
