McAuliffe 8th Graders Take Action To Get Sidewalks For Their School

McAuliffe Middle School is located on the frontage road of Loop 410 near Old Pearsall Road. Students petitioned the city for sidewalks in front of the school to make it safer for families to access the campus.

If you want something, just ask, and eighth graders at Christa McAuliffe Middle School in the Southwest ISD are learning that lesson first hand this holiday season.

They decided to write letters to their city councilman, Rey Saldaña, to ask for sidewalks in front of their school. McAuliffe is located on the frontage road of Loop 410 near Old Pearsall Road, and does not have sidewalks to let parents and students access the campus safely.

"They're all really good," said Saldaña as he flipped through the letters inside the city hall chambers.

San Antonio In Running For Boeing 777X Airliner Manufacturing Contract

San Antonio is being talked about as one of the cities competing to win the Boeing 777X airliner manufacturing contract, but local officials aren’t talking.

In Washington state, the union rejected Boeing’s contract over health care and pension demands, so Boeing is looking for alternative cities to bring the 777X.

About 15 locations, along with their home states, are coming up with lush billion-dollar incentive packages.

Saldana Ready For Second Term, Still No Word From Challenger

District 4 Councilman Rey Saldaña has his eyes set on his second term, and said the future is in the hands of the people of San Antonio.

"We need to step up to make sure we're controlling the pace of how that happens and the best way is remember that on April 29 we have an opportunity to vote," he said. "Now I'd love it if you voted for me but the one important thing is that you come out and vote."

He waxed poetic at his recent campaign kick-off in the heart of his district.

Saturday's District 4 Big Fix Offers Free Spay, Neuter And Micro-Chipping

San Antonio’s Animal Care Services and half a dozen veterinarians are preparing a makeshift operating room at Millers Pond Community Center Saturday afternoon.

The second annual Big Fix already has 300 pets signed up as of noon Friday for the free program.

City Councilman Rey Saldaña said said he saw a need for thinking outside the box when he was knocking on doors during his first campaign for city council.

The deadline for candidates to file for the San Antonio City Council elections is Friday. So far,  District 4 is the only office with no candidates listed.

The incumbent, Rey Saldaña, said that’ll change Thursday when he runs for the office, quite literally.

The Stanford graduate and former Stanford Cardinal baseball player will run seven and a half miles, do nearly 100 push-ups, 170 squats and finish with 10 burpees – a sort of squat-push up combo.

Saldaña Seeking Two More Years On City Council

District 4 City Councilman Rey Saldaña will soon officially announce his bid for re-election to city council.

The 26 year old is finishing his freshman term on the council, having worked toward increased police presence, supported the city’s Pre-K 4 SA measure and pushed for the 500-acre renovation of a former landfill -- now the Pearsall Park -- in southwest San Antonio.

Walmart Groundbreaking Signals Another Reason South Side Is Still Alive

City leaders, area chamber presidents and Walmart officials officially broke ground at the site of a new store to be built on the city’s south side. The 180,000 foot store will be located at I-35 and Palo Alto Road, where Palo Alto meets Patron Street.

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro and District 4 Councilman Rey Saldaña are going the distance for a program they say is going to change the educational trajectory of the city.

Starting from Lions Field Park on Broadway, children from the George Gervin Academy helped the two start the run, where 5,700 of their steps represent the number of San Antonio’s four year olds that are not currently served by a quality, full-day pre-kindergarten program.
