Pedal-Powered Siclovia Draws Record Attendance

On Sunday San Antonio’s Síclovía attracted thousands of people, who came out to play in the open street. The YMCA, who hosts the biannual event, said 45,000 people came out last October and this year about 65,000 people participated.

Síclovía has become a staple for the Spring and Fall seasons as Broadway Street is closed to traffic and cyclists, runners, roller bladers, and skate boarders make their way down the road without fear of vehicle traffic.

People Replace Cars On Broadway For Siclovia This Sunday

San Antonio's Síclovía is back in action on Sunday and invites people to "come play in the street." On Sunday, Broadway Street will be closed to cars and trucks between Lion's Field and Alamo Plaza.

The idea for the event originates 30 years ago in Bogota, Colombia, a city growing in fame for its efforts to cut down on pollution and get residents more active.

"You can skate, walk, run, ride, [it] doesn't make any difference. Just come out and enjoy yourself," said Geoffrey Crabtree, the acting chairman of the YMCA board.

Síclovía Continues to Grow in Route and Attendance

A record number of people flooded Broadway on Sunday for the city’s third Síclovía despite the coldest weather in months.

In its third incarnation, Síclovía attracted more than 45,000 people to play in the streets. At the opening ceremony in front of the Alamo, San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro said initiatives like Síclovía provide more opportunities for physical activity.
