$15 Million Christmas Miracle For San Antonio Food Bank

With the help of a handful of partners, the San Antonio Food Bank will no longer have to use existing funds to pay for its warehouse expansion project.

A combined $15 million – the largest campaign ever conducted by the food bank – will completely fund the project, leaving the food bank leaders to use existing money to meet the day-to-day needs of people.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who also contributed to the goal personally, joked about his presence at the press conference to announce the news.

Marriott's Tamalathon Helps Fight Hunger In San Antonio

Making tamales is a time-honored tradition in the Alamo City, but another tradition on its way to becoming just as meaningful: the Marriott Hotel's Tamalathon.

Employees and other volunteers gather each holiday season to spread, stuff and roll tamales which will be sold by the thousands. All the proceeds benefit the San Antonio Food Bank.

"You don't have to write it [the check] to us at all, that's where the money's going,” said the Marriott’s Dusty Smith, who oversees the Tamalathon.

Hostess Brands Donate Twinkies, Ho Hos and Zingers To San Antonio Food Bank

The San Antonio Food Bank is stocked with 4 million pounds of food at any given time, but turns this quantity over quickly to make room for more food that will eventually make its way to 535 distribution sites. President and CEO Eric Cooper said that every year the food bank pushes 50 million pounds of food to people in 16 counties.

"That's about six to seven semi truckloads a day that will come in and go out through the food bank,” said Cooper.
