Van Cliburn Gold Medal Winner Vadym Kholodenko Coming To San Antonio

Last year’s gold medal winner of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition was Vadym Kholodenko, and he's coming to San Antonio for a performance.

"I am very proud to be one of the Cliburn winners and this competition is very important, actually," Kholodenko said. "It stands as one of the four or five biggest competitions in the world."

Arts San Antonio is bringing Kholodenko to the Lila Cockrell Theater this Thursday, April 17. He’s playing solo, but he’ll also be doing some duets.

Vadym Kholodenko, a 26-year-old Ukranian, won the top prize Sunday night at the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth. A 20-year-old Italian, Beatrice Rana, was named runner-up, and third place went to Sean Chen, 24, the first American to reach the Cliburn finals in 16 years.

Six finalists for the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition were announced last night in Fort Worth, Texas. For the first time since its inception more than 50 years ago, the contest is taking place without its namesake. Cliburn died in February of cancer, and the competition is dealing with his loss and other changes as well.

Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Performing In Seguin

Haochen Zhang, gold medal-winning pianist in the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will be performing at Ayers Hall at Texas Lutheran University on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m.

KPAC's Randy Anderson spoke to Mr. Zhang about his experiences in Fort Worth, touring, and the music on next Monday's program.

I first heard Van Cliburn live in 1969. He played a concert at Austin's Municipal Auditorium, a barn of a place, to a sold-out audience. I was, in the vernacular of the time, blown away.

As soon as the concert was over, I rushed down from my balcony seat to wait in the long line of well wishers for my opportunity to have my program autographed. By this time, Mr. Cliburn had actually come down into the audience. He was, in a sense, a man of the people.

Legendary pianist Van Cliburn has died at his home in Fort Worth, former CEO of the Cliburn Foundation Richard Rodzinski confirms. Cliburn was diagnosed with bone cancer in August.
